Protein is found in a variety of both animal and plant foods. You may know that protein is found in a variety of both animal and plant foods. But did you know that:
- ‘Complete proteins’, mainly found in animal foods, contain all eight essential amino acids. Sources include eggs, meat, poultry, fish, milk, yoghurt and cheese.
- ‘Incomplete proteins’ do not contain all the essential amino acids. These include grains – rice, corn, barley, oats, pasta, breakfast cereals, bread; legumes – baked beans, kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans; nuts and seeds; some vegetables.
You may be at risk from inadequate protein if you are vegan/vegetarian, or on a strict weight reduction or very high carbohydrate diet. Discussing your diet with a Registered Practising Dietitian can give you guidance to meet your particular needs.
- Protein needs are highest during adolescence, but are essential all our lives.
